I went to the exhibition for some inspiration for my project and came across the work of Mona Hatoum (Measures of Distance 1988)
Mona Hatoum left Beirut in 1975 for a short visit to London. When war broke out in the Lebanon she found it impossible to return. In this video, letters from her mother in Beirut, written in Arabic, move across the screen fading in and out read out aloud by the artist in English, Hatoum's mother is also heard, speaking openly about her feelings and sexuality, accompanied by images of her in the shower.
I also took a look at a Video cassette produced and directed in USA/Japan by Bill Viola titled HATSU -YUME (First Dream) 1981, is quite similar to my project in a number of ways the moving clouds shown against a static stone taken as well as people taken at different times of the day reflects the movement of time, the way the water is captured both in the river and on the windscreen with the reflection of light is quite captivating when observing the effect it creates. These two works have giving me ideas of how to merge my video and still footages to form one story.
